Biographical Information

Shannon Johnson is an Associate Professor and the Chair of the Social Work program at UCCS’s College of Public Service. She completed her Master of Social Work and Master of Public Policy degrees at the University of Michigan in 2008 and then worked as a substance use and mental health counselor for several years before completing her Ph.D. in social work at the University of Texas at Austin in 2016. She was then an Assistant Professor at the Catholic University of America’s National Catholic School of Social Service from Fall of 2016 through Spring of 2020. Dr. Johnson’s research focuses on issues related to trauma, bereavement, spirituality, and moral injury. The key focus she carries across each of these areas is on meaning-making or the processes we use to resolve meaning crises in the face of adversity. Dr. Johnson has a particular interest in the development of spiritually-integrated and culturally responsive interventions. She is also a passionate social work educator who has instructed social work practice classes along with coursework on ethics in social work practice, social welfare policies and services, research methods, social work theories, and death and dying.
