Biographical Information
Malikah Marrus began teaching at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in the Fall 2020. She teaches social work courses and is the Director of Field Education for the BSW and MSW programs. Malikah taught social work courses at Hood College including human rights, introduction to social work and electives in juvenile justice, forensic social work, and child abuse and neglect. Malikah was the Director of Field Education and coordinator for the 40 volunteer hours program. Ms. Marrus was the co-chair of the Mid-Atlantic Field Consortium. Prior to going to Hood College, Ms. Marrus taught a variety of courses for 4 years at Missouri State University, School of Social Work and created their forensic social work course.
Prior to teaching, she was a research fellow for the Southwest Juvenile Defender Center (SWJDC), a program of the Center for Children, Law & Policy at the University of Houston Law Center in Houston, Texas and was the social worker for the agency. In this role she worked as part of the team of local attorneys representing youth in delinquency proceedings and abuse and neglect cases. Prior to joining SWJDC Ms. Marrus was an on-site coordinator and group counselor for an after school program at an inner city elementary school. This program was funded by the Hogg Foundation.
While at the University of California at Santa Barbara, Malikah Marrus created a program for females incarcerated at the California Youth Authority. This program taught inmates necessary life skills for their success after release from prison. Ms. Marrus was able to gather financial and transportation support from local businesses. She also did special lectures at the federal penitentiary at Lompoc.
Malikah Marrus received her BA in history with honors from Fisk University in 1992. Malikah Marrus received her MSW from the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work in 2003 and was a Hartford AGIFT Fellow. As a student, Ms. Marrus presented at the First National Gerontological Social Work Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in 2003. She received her Doctorate of Social Work from University of Southern California Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work.
Malikah has presented at numerous regional, national, and international conferences on social work and attorney collaborations as well as on the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
